Sun Microsystems (www.sun.com) announced on June 3 that it has entered into an agreement to acquire the storage solution developer StorageTek (www.storagetek.com) for $4.1 billion. The merger will create a network computing and data management giant capable of offering a complete range of products, services and solutions for securely managing data assets. Sun will also be well positioned to help customers better manage their privacy, security, compliance and policy requirements. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval, StorageTek shareholder approval and other customary closing conditions.
The data center operator and property manager Digital Realty Trust (www.digitalrealtytrust.com) announced on June 3 that it has entered into contracts to acquire five data center facilities and an office building totaling 642,000 square feet. Digital Realty Trust will pay a total of $109 million for the assets. One of the facilities, covering 82,000 square feet, is based in Denver, Colorado and is leased to AmeriQuest Mortgage Company (www.ameriquestmortgage.com) through February 2012. The remaining four data centers and office building are leased to SAVVIS (www.savvis.net) through February 2019. Three of the data centers and the office building are located in Santa Clara, California and the fourth data center is in El Segundo, California.
