Following up on information about KDE's upcoming desktop search utility, Microsoft has announced that they will release Longhorn, their new operating system, without WinFS, which means that Longhorn will arrive without a desktop search utility.
Instead, Microsoft will release a test version of WinFS when Longhorn becomes available to the public. The company does have intentions of including a Web search utility within its desktop search in order to stay competitive and perhaps knock Google and other search engines off the top of the search engine charts.
The delay for Longhorn's search features shouldn't affect the launch of MSN's web search service, though, which is expected to be available to the public by 2005.
