The Idealab founder and man behind the search giant Overture Services, Bill Gross, revealed his new Web search venture Snap.com (www.Snap.com) on October 5. He claimed that Snap will revolutionize Internet navigation and search-related advertising by helping people find what they're looking for faster and knowing what marketers pay for their business. Gross said in an interview at the Web 2.0 conference on October 5 that Snap's going to be controversial, but that it's awesome, and that it’s trying to improve search productivity.
What is different about Snap.com is the tools it uses to help people refine search once they have typed a query into the search box. It's also one of the first search engines to harness data on user intentions, extrapolating meaning from words typed into a search box.
Snap.com, which went public with a beta version on October 5, is Gross' latest foray into Web search after his wild success with Overture, which Yahoo bought last year for $1.63 billion. Idealab has also funded desktop search company X-1 and Insiderpages.com, a local search and social networking start-up.
