The search engine giant Google (www.google.com) announced on June 3 that it has launched a new webmaster-focused free service called Google Sitemaps (www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps). The service allows webmasters to automatically submit their Web pages to Google. To use Google Sitemaps, a webmaster needs to sign up for the scheme online. After this step, they generate and submit an XML-formatted site list using Google's own free open source Sitemap Generator. Webmasters don't require a Google account to generate and submit sitemaps. If they do create a Google account they then check the status of their maps and view diagnostic information for their submissions.
P2PReactor.com (www.p2preactor.com) announced on May 31 that the search engine giant Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) is being sued by Cecilia Barnes, a 48-year-old woman, who claims that her ex-boyfriend published naked pictures of her in Yahoo! Profiles.
The search engine company Ask Jeeves Inc. (www.ask.com) announced on May 26 that it is launching a new feature designed to provide speedier answers to inquiries entered into its search engine. Ask Jeeves will display a "Web Answer" to many of the requests that its search engine processes. For instance, if someone enters "world's largest lake" into Ask.com's search box, the top result will include a snippet listing the Caspian Sea, including its size and location.
Resellerspanel.com (www.resellerspanel.com), a reseller hosting provider, which allows everyone to resell web hosting and domain names without any investments, announced on July 26 the availability of a new multi-language option in beta mode in its web hosting control panel. Besides English, German and Spanish, the resellers and their customers can now choose to manage their hosting accounts in French, Portuguese, Norwegian, Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian. The new multi-language option of Resellerspanel.com’s web hosting control panel will be in beta mode from three to six months.
NetNation (www.netnation.com), a Canada-based managed hosting and Web hosting provider, announced on June 6 its expansion into a new state-of-the-art data center in Austin, Texas. This move will give NetNation the opportunity to provide its US customers with extremely low ping times from Coast to Coast and to Central and South America. The new data center is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by building security. An engineering response team is always available to ensure the highest uptime rates possible. It boasts 60,000 square feet of space, and multiple and redundant direct OC-12 (622Mbit/s) links that scale to OC-48 (2.5 Gbit/s) to the backbone hubs.
The Internet services provider America Online (www.aol.com) announced on June 6 that it has launched a free Web-based e-mail service (http://mail.aol.com). The mail program will provide users with 2GB of storage, as well as an anti-virus and spam component. AOL’s rivals Google and Yahoo offer free e-mail services with about 2.3GB and 1GB of storage, respectively.
The domain name registrar and online services provider eNom (www.enom.com) announced on June 2 that it now hosts more than six million domain names on its platform, including more than four million domains registered under eNom itself.
The Associated Press (www.ap.org) announced on June 2 that ICANN (www.icann.org) has approved .xxx domains and asked porn websites to have .xxx as their domain instead of .com. Sexually explicit sites will be encouraged to move to the new domains to make it easier for people to filter and avoid them. The $12 billion online porn industry can begin buying .xxx domain names by this fall or winter for $60 each.
Nominum (www.nominum.com), a leading provider of IP address management infrastructure solutions, announced on June 1 that its chief scientist Paul Mockapetris, who is widely credited with creating the Domain Name System (DNS) 22 years ago, is the 2005 recipient of the prestigious ACM SIGCOMM lifetime award.
