Iron Mountain Incorporated (www.ironmountain.com) announced on May 9 that its Intellectual Property Management business unit (www.ironmountain.com/ipm) has gained ICANN accreditation as a registrar of domain names. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (www.icann.org) is a non-profit corporation that currently manages approximately 470 accredited registrars.
Iron Mountain’s existing domain name client roster includes some of the world’s largest companies, such as Allergan, Inc. and Armstrong World Industries, Inc. These companies outsource their domain name records management functions, trusting Iron Mountain to efficiently acquire, manage and enforce the use of domain names and other intellectual property online. ICANN accreditation will allow Iron Mountain to further automate this process and provide greater flexibility for entering new markets.
Jeffrey Johnson, senior vice president and general manager of Iron Mountain’s Intellectual Property Management business unit, said that in addition to all the authoritative country-specific registries where Iron Mountain is already accredited, as an ICANN accredited registrar Iron Mountain will now be able to enhance its ability to directly insert and manipulate records with each authoritative generic and sponsored top-level domain registry, such as the popular .com and the upcoming new .eu, .jobs and .travel domains, and that this will further streamline the fulfillment process to clients for registrations, modifications and transfers, especially for complex portfolios where the client is looking to reduce risk and overall costs by outsourcing their corporate domain name records management functions.
